The analysis of appearance, subtitling, and verbal interactions found that the depiction of gender and gender hierarchy still follows the patriarchal traditions the country subscribes to. But that there are attempts within film to disrupt these norms as well as to highlight the regional ideas of pa’erduo (a man who listens to his wife) and lameizi (strong, tough, aggressive woman). The findings conclude that the portrayal of gender image and hierarchy is realistic given the negative depictions of many events and scenarios, but many interviewees encouraged researching its implications for the rest of the country as they believed the portrayal shows a realistic picture for not only Sichuan but throughout China.
