Advancing Archaeological Practices through 3D Digital Collections : Insights from the BItFROST Project

Dell'Unto, Nicolo LU orcid and Callieri, Marco (2026) In Primitive tider: arkeologisk tidsskrift
Abstract
This article discusses the transformative role of web publishing of 3D digital collections in the context of archaeology, using the example of the BItFROST project - a pioneering initiative at the Museum of Cultural History, University of Oslo. Using the Dynamic Collections framework, adapted from Lund University (https://www.darklab.lu.se/), BItFROST provides high-resolution, open-access 3D models of archaeological artefacts, enhancing both research and public engagement. Starting with a brief review of the implementation and results of the BItFROST project, and exploring potential future developments of 3D web visualisation platforms, this paper identifies opportunities and challenges within current systems, and offers insights into how...
