Increased use of the Internet has created new business opportunities and market channels. The pharmacy retail sector is using e-commerce to sell pharmaceuticals. In the USA over 400 different pharmacies were selling products to their customers and offering home delivery in the year 2000. The Swedish pharmaceutical industry has seen e-commerce as a new market channel and is introducing contact centres and an e-commerce site for consumer products. When considering home delivery of pharmaceuticals to private consumers, security and information must be addressed since there is no room for discrepancies in home delivery. This paper sets out to highlight the issues in the pharmaceutical retail sector when additional services to the customers are to be created through e-commerce. The aim is to address the problems of delivering pharmaceuticals to the consumer, and how e-commerce can be used in pharmacy retail. The development of e-commerce in pharmacy retail should not be constrained to only offer home delivery to the customers but should also be able to use e-commerce to improve overall performance of the pharmacy retail sector.
