Abstract
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have received increasing attention as power sources in electric vehicles. In commercial LIBs, the electrolyte consists of lithium salts dissolved in flammable organic solvents, which raises safety concerns because catastrophic failure of LIBs often begins with the ignition of these solvents.1 Furthermore, these solvents have poor electrochemical stability, resulting in shorter battery lifetime. In solid polymer electrolytes (SPE), the solvents are replaced with a solid polymer matrix, which drastically improves the safety of the battery.

Single-ion conducting solid polymer electrolyte (SIC-SPE) is a type of SPE in which the anion has been immobilized by covalent bonding to the polymer structure. This immobilization reduces issues such as polarization losses, and growth of metallic lithium between the electrodes during the charge of the battery.2 It has previously been established that keeping the anion spatially separated from the ion conducting polymer matrix can greatly improve the ionic conductivity.3

In the present work we have prepared polymers consisting of naphthalene sulfonate units separated by poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) segments in order to obtain microphase separated electrolytes. This was achieved by polycondensation of Cl-terminated PEO oligomers of different lengths and sodium 6,7-dihydroxy-naphtalene-2-sulfonate (NaDHNS). X-ray scattering showed that these anionic segmented polymers formed morphologies with microphase separated domains, both when the PEO phase was crystalline and when it was amorphous. The morphology of polymers with amorphous PEO remained stable up to at least 100 °C. The ionic polymers were investigated as SIC-SPEs with a focus on molecular structure, morphology, phase behavior and lithium ion conductivity. (Less)
