Cost and efficacy of perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis in a State Hospital in turkey
(2013) In Acta Medica Mediterranea 29(3). p.455-460- Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the applications and procedures of perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis (PAP) in terms of their cost and efficacy in a state hospital in Turkey. Setting: A 372-bed, state hospital in Isparta, Turkey. Method:The investigation was performed between May and August 2011 in six surgical wards. All of the surgical procedures were followed up and antibiotic use was assessed using ATC-DDD system. Results: Of a total of 364 patients examined, 340 (93.4%) were evaluated. Whereas 80.3% of the patients examined revealed PAP indication, 19.7% of them showed no indication for PAP. In 74.4% of the patients undergoing PAP procedures, PAP duration was above 24 hours. The mean PAP duration was found... (More)

The mean PAP duration was found to be 3.3 ± 2.7 days. The most intensely used antibiotic was cefazolin (194,2 DDD/100 operation). The amount of antibiotics consumed per operation was 2.67 DDD. The mean cost of PAP application per patient was 14.4 Euros. Conclusion: The frequency of antimicrobial use in PAP was found to be very high in our hospital. PAP applications extended into the postoperative period. This tendency, increases operation costs for each patient as well poses a risk for postoperative infections.
