Abstract
The paper will present preliminary findings of my ongoing PhD thesis. The thesis aims at
exploring the interplay of spatial and social life of migrants in public spaces and how this
relates to the construction of relational, multiple, flexible, multi-scalar places of belonging.
The thesis investigates how migrants, through the transgression of new territories, produce
new meanings between the home country they have left behind and the new country of
residency, in the broader socio-political and economical context of globalization and
neoliberal tendencies. More specifically the aim is to describe and define the different roles

The thesis investigates how migrants, through the transgression of new territories, produce
new meanings between the home country they have left behind and the new country of
residency, in the broader socio-political and economical context of globalization and
neoliberal tendencies. More specifically the aim is to describe and define the different roles
that the material expressions and forms, associated with these activities can take, and how
they mediate these activities in urban public spaces.
The theoretical framework of the thesis is built up on the notion of translocality as an
analytical lens in order to be able to understand the socio-spatiality and materiality of places
negotiated and (re)produced by migrants. In order to unpack such practices, the concept of
everyday urbanism (Crawford et.al. 1999) together with placemaking is forming the
interrelated theoretical perspectives of the thesis. The concept of carried affordances
(socially and materially) is applied in order to explain the materiality and affordability as well
as the constructed social infrastructure of the translocal places in relation to migrants’
everyday practices. Moreover, inspired by the concept of counterpublics (Fraser 1990), the
established understanding of publicness and privateness in relation to migrants’ everyday
encounters would be discussed.
The study is conducted in a post-industrial inner city street in Malmö with provided interstices
for various diverse groups of artists, activists, as well as entrepreneur migrants to found their
establishments. For that purpose, being inspired by reflexive ethnography, combination of
visual ethnography, regular observations and (Less)
