Abstract
Through the use of philology, this article recovers the figure of a French duke who took refuge in Sweden after the French Revolution and who contributes in an unexpected and little-known way to the transnational history between France and Sweden. Close to Axel von Fersen and introduced into Queen Charlotte’s circle of friends, the duc de Pienne was in Sweden at the time of Fersen’s murder, and subsequently frequented his sister, living with her after her brother’s sudden death, of which he also became an indirect witness.

Fragments of archival documents, fictional writings, personal diaries and memoirs help reconstruct the journey of this French aristocrat who turns out to have been a secret emissary of the future Louis XVIII.... (More)

Close to Axel von Fersen and introduced into Queen Charlotte’s circle of friends, the duc de Pienne was in Sweden at the time of Fersen’s murder, and subsequently frequented his sister, living with her after her brother’s sudden death, of which he also became an indirect witness.

Two major strands emerge from this unprecedented dialogue between French literary works and Swedish sources: on the one hand, it sheds light on the French-style playful social practices at Löfstad Castle during the last years of Sophie Piper’s life; on the other hand, it raises questions about possible political negotiations, in spite of the Duke’s move to the Swedish countryside, seemingly signalling a withdrawal. De ce dialogue inédit entre des productions littéraires en français et des sources suédoises se dégagent deux éléments majeurs : d’une part, il met au jour des pratiques de sociabilité ludique à la française présentes au château de Löfstad durant les dernières années de vie de Sophie Piper ; d’autre part, il ouvre la question d’éventuelles tractations politiques, en dépit de l’apparente retraite que constitue l’installation du duc dans la campagne suédoise.
