- This article discusses a ‘material turn’ in contemporary literature in relation to two recent works: Anne Carson’s NOX (2009) and Oscar K’s Af Olafur Kjartanssons optegnelser om den skjulte skrift (2011). Both works experiment with the medium of the book and modes of writing and print. They confront the book with other media and materials such as photographs, fragments of letters, and handwritten pages from notebooks. They thus draw on the aesthetics of so-called ‘rare books’, artists’ books, and scrapbooks, projecting this aesthetics into commercialized printed novels.
