Later Medieval Aristocratic Landscapes in Scandinavia
(2014) Chateau Gaillard XXVI 26. p.207-215- Abstract
- During the last couple of decades it has become obvious that the aristocracy created elite landscapes around their castles. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the presence of late medieval elite aristocratic landscapes in Scandinavia. The castles of Bergkvara in medieval Sweden and Glimmingehus and Gurre in medieval Denmark are discussed. The result shows that the Scandinavian aristocracy used the landscape around their castles for fulfilling the aristocratic lifestyle and that it is possible to find Scandinavian versions of the aristocratic landscapes we find elsewhere in Europe. It is however important to realise that they were adjusted to local circumstances.
