Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the microphilic parasitic protist Trichomonas vaginalis. The common sign and symptoms of the infection are vaginitis, cervicitis, dysuria, urethritis, vaginal discharge with foul smell, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), dyspareunia, preterm delivery, and low birth weight. It plays a vital role in the transmission and acquisition of HIV. The diagnosis of trophozoites through wet mount microscopy is relatively less sensitive. Culture is the gold standard technique; DNA amplification techniques have higher sensitivity. Metronidazole or tinidazole is the standard therapy with a 95% success rate. Setting new therapeutic targets and molecules to treat Trichomonas infection is urgently demanded worldwide.
