Effects of unloading of multiple necking in tensile bars

Abstract
The distribution of necks in slender structures obtained using high rate deformation often differs from the distribution obtained under quasistatic conditions. Initial thickness imperfections are often used to initiate necking at certain locations along a specimen surface. At sufficiently large deformation rates, necks may develop at sites that correlate weakly or not at all with the sites of the initial thin points. In the present study the time evolution of necks in round tensile bars with initial surface imperfections is visualized for a range of deformation velocities.
