Persistence, as explained by Schacter (2022), is characterized by the presence of unwanted (and emotional-laden) intrusive memories that typically result from the experience of highly stressful or traumatic events. The presence of these memories is known to negatively affect psychological well-being and is, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, associated with a number of psychological disorders (5th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
