Measuring Leadership, Performing Gender : Critical Perspectives on Leadership Assessments and Inventories
(2025) p.182-199- Abstract
- Recent research has brought to the fore vital discussions about the logics and
assumptions used to evaluate the significance and effectiveness of leadership
development programs and practices (Vongswasdi et al., 2023). In this chapter,

we extend these discussions by reviewing research that considers the logics and

methodological debates over the scientific rigour and validity of the scales,
measures, or algorithms that drive any particular assessment. We focus instead
on research that explores the ways that various organisational actors employ log‑
ics, assumptions, and discourses about scientific rigour and validity—as well as
about gender—as forms of legitimacy and power, and we explore the ways that
leadership assessments get mediated and mobilised to pursue particular kinds of
interests in and around organisations. (Less)
