Healthcare Systems in India

Kumar, Narendra ; Kumar, Krishna LU orcid and Ram, Indradeo (2024) p.105-123
Abstract

Although India has an extensive healthcare system, there are still significant quality gaps between the country’s rural and urban regions as well as between the country’s public and private healthcare sectors. Despite this, India is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for medical tourists due to the comparatively cheap rates and good quality of its private institutions. Students from other countries who study in India should be prepared to seek sophisticated medical treatment in the country’s many private institutions. Because studying in India presents a variety of health issues that students from developed nations may not be used to, it is essential to be familiar with the structure and operation of the Indian healthcare... Because studying in India presents a variety of health issues that students from developed nations may not be used to, it is essential to be familiar with the structure and operation of the Indian healthcare system if you need its assistance. The medical system in India is extensive and, at times, may resemble the rest of the nation in that it is fraught with ambiguity and contradictions. This chapter explains the framework of the Indian healthcare system, including its roles, as well as the techniques that are used to finance healthcare. This chapter explains the many avenues and sources of healthcare finance, specifically pertaining to the various modes of healthcare supply. Patients are responsible for paying the bulk of the costs associated with their own medical treatment via “out-of-pocket” expenses (OOPE). Other ways to pay for medical treatment include purchasing public or private health insurance, as well as contributing to the support of public medical institutions. This chapter provides an overview of the components of expenditures on healthcare as well as the need for and the resultant difficulties associated with, the assessment of the cost of providing healthcare services in the nation.
