- Abstract
- This book explores how the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah depict warriors as vulnerable. In the oracle sections of these prophetic books, vivid imagery shows the warriors failing—not only in their duties as mighty men—but also in living up to the expectations of militarised masculinity. They are presented through imagery of cowardice, weakness, pain, and fear and are often portrayed as women, particularly women in childbirth.
Using the concept of the grotesque, a lens developed by Mikhail Bakhtin and others, the study reveals how these “mighty men” are portrayed as being undone in ways that are both humorous and unsettling. - Jag undersöker den ideala krigar-mannen i två av Gamla testamentets profetböcker: Jesaja och Jeremia. Här beskrivs han som misslyckad och sårbar och i metaforer liknas han till exempel vid en kvinna som föder barn. Under perioden för böckernas tillkomst inträffade en katastrof för folket i Juda, den babyloniska exilen innebar att landet erövrades av stormakten Babylonien och att delar av folket tvångsförflyttades. Detta militära nederlag, menar jag, påverkade bilden av ideal-mannen till att bli mindre präglad av krig.
Genom att använda mig både av en historiskt orienterad metod och det litterära begreppet ”det groteska” visar jag hur omkullkastandet av ideal-bilden används som retoriskt grepp, en mot-diskurs, som sticker hål på... Profeterna använder sig av en gammal bild av den episka hjälte-krigaren som de vänder upp och ner på och visar bilden av både fysiskt och psykiskt sårbara män. Sårbarheten visar inte bara på krigarnas inkompetens utan ger också en teologisk förklaring till hur katastrofen kunde ske.
