The Future Is (Ancient) History : Judge Dredd and the Futuristic Legacy of the Classical World
(2017) p.102-117- Abstract
- The article explores how the legacy of ancient Rome served the creative vision of the future found in the british comic Judge Dredd, first
published in 1977. The article argues that Judge Dredd appropriated motifs from Roman history to help establish the framework of the future and that the comic’s satirical tone was aided by these allusions to the classical world. The article concludes that the interaction with the classical past in Judge Dredd was brokered by contemporary popular culture, thus engaging the comic in a multidirectional cultural dialogue with past, present, and future.
