Abstract
Hans Christian Andersen's tale "The Marsh King's Daughter" (1858) is analysed in relation to Birgitta Trotzig's prose tale of the same title, Dykungens dotter (1985), with the emphasis on Andersen's tale which would seem to be a pious Christian morality in which evil is destroyed and the powers of light conquer darkness. At the same time, Andersen's symbols make clear that darkness is a necessary prerequisite for light. Sexuality is a hidden source of power, both attractive and repulsive. The tale can be read as the princess' educational journey, in which her child symbolizes the insight, which is also of advantage to her sick father, healing him and his country. Hans Christian Andersen's tale "The Marsh King's Daughter" (1858) is analysed in relation to Birgitta Trotzig's prose tale of the same title, Dykungens dotter (1985), with the emphasis on Andersen's tale which would seem to be a pious Christian morality in which evil is destroyed and the powers of light conquer darkness. Conversely, it can be seen as the princess-child Helga's tale. Her split personality is healed when she gets in touch with the good side of her own origins, while shunning the evil side. The stork family takes a highly active part in the story, telling their children the story of the Marsh King's Daughter, and rediculing the bigotry and secrecy surrounding love's mysteries. In Trotzig's tale, the main point is that Christ also exists in order to restore and liberate Marsh Kings. (Less)
