Transitions toward mobility‑efficient tourism destinations : Case studies from Scandinavia
(2026)- Abstract
- Enhancing the efficiency of mobility in tourism destinations is essential for their transition toward sustainability, as it reduces environmental impacts, improves visitor experiences, and strengthens local economies. The type of reconfiguration possible to achieve more efficient mobility, and how it can be accomplished, is highly dependent on the spatial embeddedness of each destination. This chapter explores how spatial embeddedness affects mobility transitions toward transport-efficient tourism destinations. We draw on qualitative case studies of three Scandinavian destinations: Lofoten, a peripheral destination in Northern Norway; Malmö, an urban event destination in Southern Sweden; and Bornholm, a Danish island destination. We draw on qualitative case studies of three Scandinavian destinations: Lofoten, a peripheral destination in Northern Norway; Malmö, an urban event destination in Southern Sweden; and Bornholm, a Danish island destination. The findings emphasize that, when it comes to mobility, efficiency is a relational and situated concept, evolving through the interplay of physical, behavioral, and institutional dimensions. This chapter offers actionable insights on designing transitions that align with local spatial realities, contributing to more sustainable destination development through increased mobility efficiency.
