How to sort out the controversies in displaced femoral neck fractures

Rogmark, Cecilia LU (2021) p.101-111
Abstract

A displaced femoral neck fracture in a person around retirement age, with some comorbidities, poses challenges in determining the optimal surgical treatment. The long-term result will be affected by the patient's overall health, their life style factors, and the patient's compliance with restrictions. Ideally, the surgeon has to foresee the vitality of the patient during his/her remaining life span. If the patient will survive several decades with high functional demands, an internal fixation may be the best choice. A slightly higher biological age, but still an active lifestyle will speak in favor of total hip arthroplasty. If the patient is facing severe health problems, declining physical ability, and a premature death,... (More)

If the patient is facing severe health problems, declining physical ability, and a premature death, hemiarthroplasty will be a good alternative. The challenge lies in taking the time preoperatively to understand the patient's profile. The biological age and the functional demands must be determined. This chapter investigates the background for such considerations.
