Wastewater treatment and reuse through natural treatment systems
(1998) The Fourth International Symposium and Exhibition on Environmental Contamination in Central and Eastern Europe- Abstract
- Two successful samples of land treatment systems are introduced in the paper. A rapid infiltration system of the area 11.3 hectares with treatment capacity of 10,000 m3/day was constructed in Pingdu city of Shandong province. The removal of COD reached 87.5% while 89.4 for suspended solids and 64.4 % for NH3-N. In fact, the treated water already achieved the criteria of the secondary treatment even higher. Another example of over-flow system was implemented in Baiyin city, Gansu province. The pilot-scale study indicated that oil removal rate affected by land slop and hydraulic load could reach 78.3%. The construction costs of the land treatment system were only equal to a quarter of that for conventional wastewater treatment plants... (More)

The construction costs of the land treatment system were only equal to a quarter of that for conventional wastewater treatment plants with same treatment capacity. Moreover, the operation costs could reduce by 70%. A mathematical model for treatment purification and infiltration in unsaturated zone was derived when the infiltration factors for purification mechanisms were discussed. (Less)
