From Sponge City to Sponge Earth

- Water is most important to sustain all lives on this planet. For thousands of years, human activities have been interacting with Earth’s hydrologic cycle without concept that every water drop counts for societal sustainability.
With the rapid increase of population and the challenges of climate change, the humankind must pay more attention to efficient water storage in interaction with the hydrologic cycle. Sponge City (SC) concept is a popularized term to mimic process of water interception, detention and retention for integrated water resources management and sustainable development. we will discuss and analyze possible implementation of Sponge Earth project with the following possible benefits in mind in line with the Agenda 2030 and 17 SDG-goals: 1) to improve the existing agricultural and living conditions connected with water; 2) to improve the local ecosystem; 3) to counteract or mitigate the climate change impacts; 4) to improve the living condition and environment and to provide more inhabitable spaces in both urban and rural areas.
