Scattering of electromagnetic waves by randomly oriented particles

Kristensson, Gerhard LU (2026) In Reports on communication systems
Abstract
In this paper, a revisit to the topic of electromagnetic scattering by a randomly oriented obstacle is made. The focus is on a general polarization state of the incident field. Specifically, the left and right circular polarizations are treated.

We derive the analytic expressions of the scattering observables, such as the orientational averages of the extinction, scattering and absorption cross sections as well as the orientational average of the scattering dyadic, in terms of traces of the transition matrix of the scatterer. A series of numerical examples illustrates the result of the paper. Several addition theorems of the vector spherical harmonics are presented.
