Strategic improvisation in crisis communication
(2022) p.405-420- Abstract
- Falkheimer and Heide further develop their integration of improvisation into crisis communication. They argue that improvisation is a way to develop innovative thinking. Falkheimer and Heide argue crisis managers must adapt to new circumstances and situations making improvisation a value asset. Drawing from the leadership literature, they develop the idea of strategic improvisation. Strategic improvisation is a situational interpretation within a given framework. Falkheimer and Heide note that strategic improvisation is a reaction in the moment but that it is not random nor devoid of plans. Their chapter navigates this tension between planning and adaptability.
