Abstract

Obesity is reaching levels never seen before in the world population, causing a rise in the incidence of metabolic disorders. The increase of visceral storage of adipose tissue is related to chronic inflammation and deregulation of the metabolism, causing insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and endothelial dysfunction. These pathologies, when they appear together, are known as metabolic syndrome and are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. In such context, is of great importance to fully understand the mechanisms that control expression of the genes involved. In this work we will focus on the role of RNA as a key regulatory element in the control of gene expression in metabolic disorders.
