Only few fibres located in the subepithelial layer contained pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide. Nerve fibres containing substance P and in particular calcitonin gene-related peptide were abundant in and beneath the epithelium and scattered in the submucosal layers around blood vessels. (Less)
