- Abstract Interdigitated electrodes made up of two individually addressable interdigitated comb-like electrode structures have frequently been suggested as ultra sensitive electrochemical biosensors. Here we electrochemically characterize interdigitated electrodes both fabricated by use of electron beam lithography and by nanoimprint lithography (NIL). The systems has been used for detection of dopamine and characterized electrochemically with ferrocyanide/ferricyanide. For the latter purpose, a series of coupled cyclic voltammograms have been recorded to determine collection efficiency as a function of concentration as well as sweep rate. Signal enhancement effects are apparent for interdigitated electrodes and are attributed cycling of the reduced and oxidized species between the electrodes pairs. This process is diffusion limited and thereby strongly dependent on the inter electrode distances why nanometer sized electrodes are desirable. Our system is a 100 μm times 100 μm electrode array structure made up of 200 nm electrodes fingers with a spacing of likewise 200 nm. Large quantities of such structures would for many studies be desirable and hence NIL technology could with benefit be used to reduce fabrication costs, as demonstrated here.
