Effects of word order and embedded clause boundary on intonation in Tokyo Japanese

Abstract
This paper reports results of a production experiment in which nine native speakers of Tokyo Japanese read aloud sentences with varied syntactic structures, word orders, and levels of awareness of the syntactic structure. In particular, this study investigates the prosodic realization of embedded clause boundaries and potential effects of word order and readers’ awareness of the syntactic structure on the syntax–prosody mapping.

While the expected effects of lexical pitch accents were detected consistently on f0-rises at the onset of nouns phrases, effects of embedded clause boundary were found at only one of the two expected locations.

Word order did not show consistent effects, suggesting that word order alternation within a clause does not affect the overall prosodic realization of the sentence. The effects of readers’ structural awareness were detected not on f0-rises, but on f0-max at crucial locations. (Less)
