Widening income and knowledge inqualities have ignited the discussion on how universities be engines of a growth process that is inclusive of all segments of society. The current literature focuses on university-community engagments through the third missions with little attention given to the integration of social innovation into the teaching and research missions of universities. Also, there are little incentive structures for universities to actively commit resources to promoting social innovation as compared to commercial innovations which is a major source of revenue for universities and their staff.
