- Among the polities in the Eastern European inter-imperial peripheries, Romania has witnessed a particular electoral effervescence in 2024/2025, with ripple effects across the region, and making the headlines across the world: the EU parliamentary elections organized concomitantly with local elections (in June 2024); the national legislative elections (in early December); and the presidential elections (initially in late November 2024, which were annulled and rerun in May 2025). Examining these elections through an intersectional lens, the special issue provides a much-needed critical intervention, by bridging disciplinary divides. It highlights how such an Eastern European inter-imperial location as Romania may be deployed as a matrix to explain wider political developments and stimulating insights at the junction of several systems of social ordering. As such, it is part of a wider intellectual effort, pushing for knowledge production beyond mainstream Western-centric conceptualizations. Finally, it provides critical insights into the localized meaning and trajectory of democracy, at a time of significant corrosion of democratic infrastructures across the world. (Less)
