- Libraries, archives, and museums are all based on collections, entailing the need for knowledge organization. However, the need for, and practice of, knowledge organization differs in the three institutions. The aim of this chapter is to describe and discuss differences and similarities in knowledge organization between LAMs. For instance, in libraries there are a distinct use of standardization and a focus on searching; in archives the principle of provenance is central; and in museums the emphasis is on interpretation of the collections.
