Research in the field of historical demography and related areas have in recent decades made increasing use of longitudinal population databases. This research has mainly focused on rural populations before 1900. This book belongs to a movement that seeks to bridge the gap in historical demography by adding urban populations from the twentieth century. Research in the field of historical demography and related areas have in recent decades made increasing use of longitudinal population databases. This research has mainly focused on rural populations before 1900. This book belongs to a movement that seeks to bridge the gap in historical demography by adding urban populations from the twentieth century. The book is made up of individual chapters related to two main questions: what were the typical life course and the phases in life like in the city of Gothenburg in the first half of the twentieth century; and to what extent were various life courses and transitions between phases in life associated with mobility in local markets for labour and housing? In the chapter, the life cycle perspective and various forms of mobility are discussed before introducing the Gothenburg Population Panel, a random sample of people living in Gothenburg in 1915–1943 used in most of the subsequent chapters.
