A renewed reading of Kurt Lewin’s “Kriegslandschaft” (War Landscape): Personal experience, phenomenology and concept construction
(2005) The IXth European Congress of Psychology- Abstract
- The phenomenological essay “Kriegslandschaft” (War landscape) was Lewin’s first learned endeavour after his thesis and builds on his experiences as an artillery foot soldier during WW 1. In the present paper earlier readings by Heider and Bronfenbrenner are reviewed with a view to nuclei of phenomenological concepts, such as i.a. boundary, direction and zone, later to be developed in Lewin’s writing and research. In a re-reading by the author further forerunners to later concepts in group dynamics are presented and analyzed. Finally a shift in Lewin’s basic philosophy of science is suggested. His early paradigmatic stance is closer to social constructivism than to his later neo-positivistic functionalism.
