Discrepancies in testing, classification and performance of bio-based insulation materials
(2025) In Journal of Physics: Conference Series 3121(1).- Abstract
- The fire behaviour of bio-based insulation materials is studied by comparing results from Cone Calorimeter and small-scale furnace tests. Clear differences in fire behaviour were observed between wood fibre and hemp fibre insulation. The analysis reveals that smouldering plays a critical role, particularly in furnace tests. Limitations of current fire resistance tests are highlighted, particularly the lack of smouldering assessment and the discrepancy in resistance- and reaction-to-fire evaluations. Further research is needed to improve testing and classification, and to ensure a proper use of bio-based insulation materials.
