Fire Performance of Impregnated Wood Subjected to Natural Aging in the Swedish Climate

Abstract
The growing demand for sustainable construction materials has led to an increased interest in utilizing wood in façade applications. Wood in façade applications can be treated with impregnation to enhance its fire performance; however, concerns surrounding fire safety necessitate a comprehensive understanding of how impregnated wood materials evolve over time in outdoor environments.

This study, presents a systematic investigation into the fire performance of impregnated wood specimens that have undergone natural aging in southern Swedish climatic conditions. Cone calorimetry tests of reference material (non-aged, non-treated and non-exposed) and exposed wood is employed to assess the effect of natural short-term aging on the samples. The outcomes of this study offer valuable “food-for-thought” for researchers, engineers, architects and policymakers concerned with fire safety in wood facades, particularly in regions characterized by challenging climates like Sweden. By enhancing our understanding of how impregnated wood performs after exposure to natural aging, this research to supports the sustainable and safe utilization of these material in applications like facades, facilitating the creation of more robust and fire-resilient building designs.
