Genuine savings and economics for the Anthropocene

McLaughlin, Eoin and Ducoing, Cristian LU orcid (2021) p.157-165
Abstract
One of the main reasons why we have failed to reach a sustainable development is due to the narrow focus on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as the main development indicator. The sparsity of alternative indicators has created a misleading impression for policy makers, and society as a whole, about sustainability. In order to fulfil the new challenges of the Anthropocene we propose a widespread adoption and use of alternative development indicators such as Genuine Savings. This chapter traces levels of sustainability using the Genuine Savings metric (henceforth, GS) for four countries: Australia, Chile, United Kingdom and United States. GS has proven to be a relevant indicator of sustainable development. GS is based on the concept of wealth... (More)

GS has proven to be a relevant indicator of sustainable development. GS is based on the concept of wealth accounting and addresses shortcomings in conventional metrics by incorporating broader measures of saving and investment, including human capital (education), social costs of pollution and natural resource depletion.
