Preferred housing attributes among adults aged 55 years and older with an expressed interest in relocation

Abstract

The RELOC-AGE program addresses knowledge gaps on associations between housing, relocation, and active and healthy aging. The aim of this study was to investigate preferred housing attributes, and whether such attributes differed depending on desired type of dwelling or individual characteristics, among adults in Sweden aged 55 years and older with an expressed interest in relocation. From the Prospective RELOC-AGE cohort (N = 1,964), this study was based on those who had not relocated at the one-year follow-up (n = 1,247). The RELOC-AGE program addresses knowledge gaps on associations between housing, relocation, and active and healthy aging. The most preferred housing attributes were balcony/patio (83%), lift if the dwelling is located upstairs or higher (60%), and good parking facilities (51%). The pattern of preferred housing attributes differed in relation to the desired type of future dwelling. Individual characteristics were significantly associated with the desired housing types. Contributing with knowledge on housing preferences among adults 55 years or older considering relocation, the results of this study can inform and inspire planners and policymakers to develop attractive housing options for older adults.
