Forget the Toulmin Scheme, Remember the Epicheireme!
(2024) European Conference on Argumentation In Studies in Logic and Argumentation 110. p.203-216- Abstract
- The Toulmin model is reminiscent of the classical argument structure called the
epicheireme. Upon closer inspection they turn out to be fundamentally different.
For the contemporary argumentation analyst or rhetorical critic, both structures are burdened with drawbacks. The Toulmin model suffers from unclarity regarding definitions of its elements and the epicheireme from divergent traditions in classical times. Neither model offer criteria for evaluation. The epicheireme was devised for the production of speeches and Toulmin’s model is descriptive.
