Forget the Toulmin Scheme, Remember the Epicheireme!

Hietanen, Mika LU orcid (2024) European Conference on Argumentation In Studies in Logic and Argumentation 110. p.203-216
Abstract
The Toulmin model is reminiscent of the classical argument structure called the
epicheireme. Upon closer inspection they turn out to be fundamentally different.
For the contemporary argumentation analyst or rhetorical critic, both structures are burdened with drawbacks. The Toulmin model suffers from unclarity regarding definitions of its elements and the epicheireme from divergent traditions in classical times. Neither model offer criteria for evaluation. The epicheireme was devised for the production of speeches and Toulmin’s model is descriptive. Even though Toulmin’s model for half a century has been the main method of argumentation analysis in many disciplines, including Rhetoric, I argue that for some uses, the epicheireme is... (More)

Even though Toulmin’s model for half a century has been the main method of argumentation analysis in many disciplines, including Rhetoric, I argue that for some uses, the epicheireme is a better choice since (1) the elements are easier to use, (2) the epicheireme is more flexible, and (3) it naturally connects with neo-Aristotelian rhetorical criticism whereas the Toulmin model is based on a different theoretical concept.
