Transport, Built Environment and Development Control : A comparative urban study

Book, Karin LU and Eskilsson, Lena LU (1998)
Abstract
Improved transport possibilities give rise to changes in land use; settlement patterns and activity structures and likewise the spatial distribution of different activities form the basis of transport need. Transport structure and built environment influence one another, and in order to be able to develop better urban policy it is important to be aware of the relations between them. A determining factor for the transport structure and built environment of cities is development control. The effect of development control boils down primarily to the question of the balance between public and private involvement in urban planning and development.

A determining factor for the transport structure and built environment of cities is development control. The effect of development control boils down primarily to the question of the balance between public and private involvement in urban planning and development.

The main purpose of the dissertation is to explain intraurban relations between transport structure, the built environment and power structure (development control). The study compares five cities from different parts of the world to unravel the influence which development control has on their urban transport systems and built environment. (Less)
