Breaking the rules to reach the top? The ethical dimension bound to the opportunity process

Hägg, Gustav LU and Kurczewska, Agnieszka LU (2021) In Frontiers in European Entrepreneurship series p.41-60
Abstract

The paper aims to address how ethics plays an important role in understanding the entrepreneur as an experiencing agent throughout the entrepreneurial process. Drawing from normative ethics, we conceptualize an opportunity process model that posits the entrepreneur as a moral agent who acts in an ethical manner from the intention to identify an opportunity, through the entrepreneurial actions taken during its evaluation, until exploitation. We apply a case study approach and pattern matching logic to investigate how the case of AirBnB follows our conceptual model. By studying the ethical dimension of the opportunity process, we elucidate what ethical responsibility means for entrepreneurial practice in the opportunity process.
