In the context of a Church in construction, it is not surprising that the first phase of Christian Egyptian literature consisted of systematic translation of biblical works from Greek into Coptic (third through fourth century). Between the fourth and fifth centuries, monasticism, one of the most significant cultural phenomena of Christian Egypt, played a critical role in the development of Coptic literature.
