Abstract
This essay aims to analyse new roads that have been proposed in Rosengård, Malmö by using Bill Hillier’s configuration theory and by extension space syntax. The way in which the roads are justified, the conflicts that may arise and the way space syntax may be used in planning are analysed and applied by making new road proposals as well as looking at the existing ones. To do this document analysis, field work and depth maps are used in tandem, with the methods informing each other. Particularly good road options are highlighted. Though they have great potential to increase the density in the area, the potential downsides are highlighted, with a focus on what may be lost if implementing the new road proposals. To extend this discussion the normalisation of densification in planning conversations and the way this does not always have a sound theoretical backing is explored. The importance of using space syntax in tandem with qualitative processes is emphasised. (Less)
