- Technical drawings play an important role in many industrial processes, including
product development, manufacturing, and lifecycle management, by representing
the product definition. The purpose of the study was to investigate which processes
influence technical drawing creation and management, what challenges are
associated with these processes, and how these challenges can be addressed through
the development of a handbook. The thesis was carried out at the company Backer,
which develops heating solutions.

The study identified a set of interconnected organizational processes related to
technical drawings, including drawing creation, product lifecycle management,
review activities, and engineering change management. The identified process
structure may support organizations with similar workflows when investigating
drawing-related practices.
The organizational study identified several challenges related to the investigated
processes, including inconsistent practices, dependency on tacit knowledge,
fragmented documentation, and unclear responsibilities. These challenges create
risks of inconsistencies in drawings, reduced traceability, and incorrect
manufacturing.
The organizational study identified organizational needs which were translated into
measurable handbook requirements. Based on these requirements, the handbook
was developed through integrating international standards with organizational
guidelines. The handbook was verified and validated to see that it would fulfill its intended function and be useful in practical day-to-day work. Although these
activities were limited due to the timeframe of the project.
The developed handbook is expected to support more unified drawing practices,
improve drawing quality, and facilitate onboarding within the organization. (Less)
