Development of a rooftop tent - designed for a younger user

- Abstract
- This thesis aimed to develop a rooftop tent targeting the needs of younger users.
Using the Double Diamond design methodology the team was guided throughout the phases of the project. The research phase consisted of thorough market research, a questionnaire with over 50 participants and seven interviews. This data was then analyzed with the target user in mind by developing a methodology for mapping the participants based on age and experience with rooftop tents. These factors had an impact on how the data was analyzed and what conclusions were drawn, due to patterns being more easily distinguished. Concluding the discover and define phases was a redefined brief, focusing on what the product needed to accomplish.

These factors had an impact on how the data was analyzed and what conclusions were drawn, due to patterns being more easily distinguished. Concluding the discover and define phases was a redefined brief, focusing on what the product needed to accomplish.
An overarching concept was defined early in the develop-phase. The concept was to separate installation and set-up into two distinct states. By not compromising on the quick and easy set-up that is traditionally associated with rooftop tents but rather making the installation include more steps, the tent can be divided into two packages while off the car to ease the transportation and storage of the tent. Through brainstorming, sketching and prototyping a design concept was developed.
In the final full-scale prototype, these two packages were divided into the base and the canopy. They can be stored in a smaller apartment due to them only measuring 115 x 50 cm and weighing 18kg and 4kg respectively. When assembled and mounted on the car, they stay together, allowing for quick set-up and take down while traveling. (Less)
