Workplace Relationships in Hybrid Work

- Abstract (Swedish)
Med användning av sociala utbytesteorin, ömsesidighet (the norm of reciprocity), organizational citizenship... (More)

(Less) - Abstract
- As hybrid work structures become more common and organizations seek to return to the office, a relevant question arises about the role social relationships in the workplace play in employees' choice of workplace. The aim of this study is to examine whether workplace relationships correlate to employees' willingness to choose the office over working remotely, with a particular focus on workplace relationships and connections to social aspects and extra-role performance. The study is based on five hypotheses to guide and structure the process and findings, and the data collection was done using a quantitative survey. Using social exchange theory, the norm of reciprocity, organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), extra-role performance, and the job demands-resources model (JD-R) certain behaviors and interactions are operationalized, with the aim of evaluating potential correlations and their strengths. Calculations and evaluations are mainly correlational bivariate and regression analyses, as well as chi-square tests. The calculations and results are based on 239 respondents who have the possibility to work remotely in their current work position.
We found limited support for our hypotheses. Only the hypothesis that employees who experience higher levels of social support from colleagues are more likely to participate in extra-role performance can be fully accepted. However, our other findings indicate that employees who have stronger workplace relationships are neither more likely to work from the office nor do they necessarily experience higher levels of OCB, and that employees are not more likely to work from the office even if they participate in or experience higher levels of OCB or support in the workplace. All together, the correlation between workplace relationships and the will to work from the office does not present as significantly positive or strong. (Less)
