- Abstract
- Older adults have throughout history played an important role in the shaping of society. Through work and life experience, they have helped pass along valuable knowledge and hence paved the way for future generations’ possibilities of building and creating a way of living and functioning in an ever-changing world. Yet, the aging generations can sometimes be forgotten or marginalised in modern society. This qualitative study explores how senior citizens experience their participation in society and which factors may influence their social connections in everyday life. Based primarily on semi-structured interviews, complemented by a digital survey, the study sheds light on how social interaction is understood from the older adults’ viewpoint... (More)

Based primarily on semi-structured interviews, complemented by a digital survey, the study sheds light on how social interaction is understood from the older adults’ viewpoint and what may be needed to better recognise the need and meaning of including aging generations in society in a way that they and their important contributions for all of us are not forgotten. One of the study’s main findings is that the perception of older people as frequently lonely appears to be more common among those who are not themselves in the target group. Furthermore, it seems the Municipality of Lund has a wide variety of measures to prevent loneliness and social isolation, according to statements from some participants. The study also highlights the importance of distinguishing between voluntary and involuntary loneliness, as solitude is not necessarily experienced as negative by the elderly themselves, but may instead reflect personal choice and autonomy.
