Abstract
This Bachelor’s thesis from the School of Social Work, Lund University aims to use qualitative interview data from various social service providers to identify problems and difficulties people with mental illness face in finding stable housing. We conducted and analyzed semi-structured verbal interviews with five social workers, four of whom worked for the municipality in various capacities and one of whom worked for a charity organization. We conducted and analyzed semi-structured verbal interviews with five social workers, four of whom worked for the municipality in various capacities and one of whom worked for a charity organization. The interviewees were selected to provide perspectives from different areas of work related to homelessness and mental illness. The interviewees identified limited access to timely psychiatric care, difficulties in cooperation between different services, and limited access to suitable housing as central barriers to achieving stable housing for people with mental illness. Furthermore, a lack of cooperation within social services and with various mental health facilities and a focus on individual rather than structural issues compounded issues for already at-risk individuals. Conversely, the social care providers we interviewed all agreed that establishing a personal rapport with people struggling with severe mental health issues was critical for enabling trust and creating a safe environment to work in addressing the relevant issues for that person.
