Abstract
The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) is characterized by a weakening of the magnetic field intensity and is a phenomenon that has consequences for space infrastructure affected by elevated radiation in low orbit. Over the past 200 years, thanks to modern satellite data, the anomaly has been observed to move westward towards the South Atlantic. The anomaly has also been suggested to be an indicator of a future pole reversal. Today, past and future modelling of the SAA is limited by a lack of paleomagnetic data. Around 1100 CE, paleomagnetic models suggest that the anomaly was located above the subantarctic island of Kerguelen, making the region an interesting study area to better understand the long-term evolution of the anomaly. In this study,... (More)

Around 1100 CE, paleomagnetic models suggest that the anomaly was located above the subantarctic island of Kerguelen, making the region an interesting study area to better understand the long-term evolution of the anomaly. In this study, magnetic data from sediments of Lake Athena on Kerguelen are analyzed with the aim of correcting data series for coring induced errors and determining the paleomagnetic direction. Comparisons between the study’s corrected data and current reference models highlight significant differences, for example in the location of the South magnetic pole. According to the new measurement data, the South Pole was located close to Kerguelen around 1100 CE. This is inconsistent with the anomaly in the Indian Ocean around this time, suggesting that current reconstructions of the history of the SAA need to be revised. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
