Title: How wide is the music education? A study of genre diversity in music education in elementary school.

The study investigates the diversity of musical genre in music education for 7th to 9th grade pupils in Swedish schools. There have been interviews with secondary school teachers and 17 pupils in 8th grade from four different schools in a Swedish town. The starting point is that education in different genres, foster the music knowledge of the pupils. The teachers in the study say that only a few genre works with the pupils and these are usually pop and rock. The teachers also say it is difficult to teach in other genres than pop and rock. The amount of lessons for musical educa-tion in the curriculum is a limiting factor, the teachers haven’t time to fulfil the goals stated in the curriculum and the pupils will rarely get any deeper knowledge in any other genre besides pop and rock. Studien behandlar musikundervisningens genrebredd i årskurs 7-9. Intervjuer har utförts med fyra högstadielärare och 17 elever i årskurs 8 på fyra olika skolor i en svensk stad. Utgångs-punkten för studien är att undervisning i flera olika genrer främjar elevernas musikkunskap. Lärarna i studien låter förstå att enbart vissa genrer går hem hos eleverna och dessa genrer är oftast pop och rock. Lärarna menar också att det är svårt att undervisa i andra genrer än pop och rock. Tiden räcker inte till för att gå in på mer ovana musikgenrer som ofta innebär en avancerad nivå. Studiens resultat visar att eleverna vill ta del av fler genrer än pop och rock.
