(2014) LMMN91 20132Malmö Academy of Music
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to investigate how six jazz musicians perceive the difference between playing and practicing, their ideas of playing and practicing and how their understanding of the two words has changed in the course of the past years, and also what they think of the distinction between playing and practicing. Six professional jazz musicians were interviewed and the results of the interviews were then analyzed, categorized and compared to previous research in related areas.
The results indicate that most of the participants in the study make a personal distinction between playing and practicing. However, most of them do not believe that this distinction is of any importance for musical development. Even though several... The results indicate that most of the participants in the study make a personal distinction between playing and practicing. However, most of them do not believe that this distinction is of any importance for musical development. Even though several participants claim to benefit from the distinction between playing and practicing, they still state that this distinction is optional and that it is not perceived as important to everybody. According to the participants, the difference between playing and practicing appears to be connected to how a musician chooses to focus. Previous research on practice does not rule out this kind of definition. (Less) - Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
