Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine what specific content music teachers in secondary school teach, and what motivations they provide for their choice of content. The study was conducted in the form of a survey in which two sample groups were asked to answer questions regarding the contents of their teaching concerning the demarcated areas Chords, Rhythm and Notes and theory. This subject is intractable, as existing research approaches subject content in school mainly from an over-looking perspective, while this study aims to illustrate the subject in as specific and concrete terms as possible. The results are presented in tabular form and processed through numerical data analysis as well as through text analysis of responses given in... (More)
The purpose of this study is to examine what specific content music teachers in secondary school teach, and what motivations they provide for their choice of content. The results are presented in tabular form and processed through numerical data analysis as well as through text analysis of responses given in free text by the respondents participating in the survey. The results and literature paint the picture that music teachers share a common perception regarding what constitutes the core content of the music subject. From this core content the teachers’ individual preferences and priorities then express themselves. Justifications for this core content refers to the playability and the development of students' ability to interact in ensemble situations. Clarification of this core content can have positive effects on music teacher's overview of, and opportunities to actively consider the content of their own teaching and pupils 'and parents' insight and understanding of the subject building blocks.
